Suffering from tinnitus
Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, is a common symptom. These sounds are added noises perceived by the patient. The exact mechanism of tinnitus is not yet fully understood, probably involving vascular, muscular or nervous trouble.
They can be accompanied by vertigo or deafness of some severity. Medication prescribed by a medical specialist can improve blood circulation in the ear.
In 25% of cases tinnitus is intolerable, causing a sharp deterioration of daily life, concentration and sleep, and leaving no choice but to act. There is no curative treatment of tinnitus.
If you are experiencing hearing loss, hearing aids may reduce tinnitus. There are several possible explanations for the effectiveness of hearing aids in case of tinnitus. Some studies suggest that amplification reduces the symptoms of tinnitus: it increases neuronal activity and reduces the emphasis on internal sounds.
An evaluation by a hearing health professional can help determine if a hearing aid could relieve your symptoms of tinnitus.
White noise sound emitted by machines are also effective. These produce continuous low level of white noise that can reduce tinnitus. Some people are helped by simple solutions such as an air conditioner, humidifier or fan, or playing music in the background.
